Media ownership in the UK
The latest report by the Media Reform Coalition (MRC) report shows an alarming level of concentration in the ownership of all kinds of UK media, including online news platforms, national newspaper and online newsbands, commercial radio and video-on-demand subscriptions.

Unchecked media mergers and corporate takeovers is making the situation worse, while the opaque and unaccountable influence that a few Big Tech platforms exert on UK media poses serious challenges for independent journalism and our digital rights.

MRC advocates for a proactive, future-proof framework for media plurality that supports a greater diversity of media owners, and public interest reforms to promote and uphold the highest standards in journalism

Media bias
The most thorough examination of bias in the mainstream media remains Nick Davies' book Flat-Earth News, 2008, along with his sister publication Hack Attack, 2014. In the latter book, Davies describes his own experience in uncovering the phone-hacking scandal that started in the last century and generated mass awareness with the Milly Dowler revelations in 2011. We refer you to the Wikipedia entries for these two books.

We also suggest reading Alan Rusbridger's book Breaking News: The Remaking of Journalism and Why It Matters Now, 2018. Rusbridger was Editor-in-Chief at the Guardian between 1995 and 2015, a period when technological change, notably the development of the internet, was upending the fundamentals of journalism, and when the Guardian supported a series of ground-breaking investigations'
There follows Jonathan Coulter's report on the Media Reform Coalition's conference on 200 Years of the Guardian, 2021, in which he sought to understand why this high-minded newspaper, functioning under the non-profit Scott Trust, had apparently betrayed its core principles and commitment to the sanctity of facts.

Media bias and misreporting have been particularly evident as regards Israel and Palestine. We present a powerful analysis of bias in reporting about Gaza from the Centre for Media Monitoring (March 2024), and a compendium of information of BBC bias since the beginning of the 21st century.

The Situation in Israel/Palestine
We start with a paper on the history behind the genocide that Israel has rolled out against the Palestinians in Gaza, the vital context which is so often missing in journalistic accounts.

We follow up with a moving illustrated report by CAMPAIN committee member, Miranda Pinch, based on her visit to the West Bank in November 2024, and the visit by another member, Mary, to the West Bank and the Israeli Negev in March 2025. It is worth reading both these reports as they complement each other.

Israel in the international courts and the United Nations
This paper lists the policies and actions of Israel in the West Bank and Gaza that are currently the subject of legal cases at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague, and determinations by the United Nations (UN).

JUST Action Palestine
Nicola Grove has organised on-line meetings on Monday evenings to engage Quakers and others in acting for Palestine.
The exercise has been going with a steady weekly attendance of 15-22 people since November 2024 and has produced regular reports and recommendations for action. These have allowed participants to engage in letter-writing campaigns and other initiatives.

The misdefinition of antisemitism
Defenders of Israel frequently accuse of antisemitism those who question its doctrinal foundations and/or its behaviour towards native Palestinians. In recent years, they have often rested their case on a working definition of antisemitism formulated by the International Holocaust Remembrance Association (IHRA), a document that conflates the criticism of Israel with antipathy towards Jews. Here we present an excellent website called No to the IHRA that systematically debunks this definition from moral and legal standpoints.

We follow up with the article What is wrong with the IHRA definition, by Deckers & Coulter, published in the Journal of Moral Philosophy, ResPublica.

We also show how accusations of antisemitism were used to bring down Jeremy Corbyn, the one British prime ministerial who sought a fair deal for the Palestinians, and his supporters, many of who are Jews.
